Target Number 61, September 20th, 1864: National Archives Record Group 74, Entry 98 “Reports Concerning Target Practice on Iron Plates”, Volume 1, Page 64.

US Navy Bureau of Ordnance test of September 20th, 1864: five projectiles were fired at a 5-inch iron armor plate manufactured by Brown and Company of Sheffield, England backed by 20 inches of solid oak.

The five projectiles were:

  • 11-Inch Cast Iron shot fired with a 30 pound powder charge

  • 15-inch Cast iron shot fired with a 60 pound powder charge

  • 7-inch Brooke Rifle captured aboard CSS Atlanta (123 pound cast iron projectile) fired with a 20 pound powder charge

  • 150-Pounder (145 pound flathead steel shot) fired with a 16 pounder powder charge

  • 10-Inch Cast Steel shot fired with a 40 pound powder charge
