Republic of Yucatán 18-Pounder Gunade at Trophy Park

18-Pounder Gunade manufactured for the Republic of Yucatán on display at Trophy Park at Norfolk Naval Shipyard

Trophy Park at Norfolk Naval Shipyard displays a mix of US Navy weaponry from throughout the Navy’s history and a handful of items captured from other nations. One of the latter is an 18-Pounder Gunade manufactured for the Republic of Yucatán. Presumably it was brought back from the Mexican American War.

Though heavy paint obscures the markings, I believe its connection to the Republic of Yucatán may be seen in the letters cast into the barrel.

A Gunade is the term used for a carronade with trunnions rather than the traditional (for a carronade) loop under the tube.
