US Navy 6”/30-Caliber Rifle Mark 3 of USS Maine
A US Navy 6-Inch / 30-Caliber Gun, Mark 3, is displayed in Alpena, Michigan. It was mounted on USS Maine. Maine, of course, suffered a major explosion in Havana Harbor in 1898 - an event that was a catalyst for the Spanish American War. It is mounted upon its original central pivot Vavasseur mounting.
USS Olympia - Protected Cruiser of the New Navy
USS Olympia was commissioned in 1895 at a time when wooden steam and sail ships of the “Old Navy” still actively cruised as part of the US Navy. She represents the “New Navy” and the end of the time period that this website actively covers. She is a unique survivor of the late 19th Century US Navy and a national treasure in need of our support!
