The 6.4-Inch Brooke of CSS Tennessee at Naval Station Norfolk

6.4-Inch Brooke Number 49 (Tredegar Number 1853) at Naval Station Norfolk

The two Brooke Rifles at Naval Station Norfolk were photographed by friend-of-the-page Vinson Miller. Many, many thanks to him for sharing these photos!

A 6.4-Inch Brooke Rifle which was captured aboard CSS Tennessee is displayed at Naval Station Norfolk alongside an identical 6.4-Inch Brooke from CSS Albemarle.

The Tennessee Brooke was manufactured for the Confederate Navy at Tredegar in June 1863 and was sent to Richmond Naval Ordnance Words for banding and rifling in August of 1863. Its registry number is 49 and its Tredegar Foundry Number is 1853 (Olmstead et al. pg. 219).

All six Brooke Rifles carried aboard CSS Tennessee survive:

  • 7-Inch Rifle S-5 is displayed at Selma, Alabama

  • 7-Inch Rifle S-10 and three 6.4-Inch Rifles are at the Washington Navy Yard

  • And the fourth 6.4-Inch Brooke is displayed at Naval Station Norfolk

Two 6.4-Inch Brooke Rifles at Naval Station Norfolk. The near Brooke was carried aboard CSS Tennessee. The far Brooke was carried aboard CSS Albemarle.

The Tredegar Foundry Number, 1853, may just be seen on the upper muzzle face.
