Four 3.3-Inch Parrott Rifles are displayed around a monument in Montrose, Pennsylvania. This type of Parrott was manufactured from the same block as the standard 2.9-Inch 10-Pounder of 1861. Why they were made with a larger bore is unknown. I have photographed two other survivors of the type in South Carolina at The Citadel and in Kingstree. Olmstead et al. notes that a May 1861 letter from Robert P. Parrott states that some number of this type of rifle was ordered by the Union Committee of New York. Most of the eight survivors have “Cav.” stamped on the band, as do three of the four in Montrose. Weight of each of these tubes is around 890 pounds. Many thanks to friend-of-the-page James Murray for these photos!
