Rifled 12-Pounder Boat Howitzer (Steel) at Trophy Park

Rifled 12-Pounder Boat Howitzer Number 298 at Trophy Park

While most of Dahlgren's Boat Howitzers were made of bronze, twelve of his rifled 12-Pounder Boat Howitzers were made of steel. Three of these survive, with one, Number 298, being displayed on an original carriage at Trophy Park at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Layers of paint obscure the markings on the tube. Number 298 is not known to have seen shipboard service.

The Rifled 12-Pounder Boat Howitzer has a 3.4-inch bore. Weight of the steel examples is 791 pounds whereas the Bronze models are about 875 pounds. This rifle was manufactured for the US Navy in 1863.
