US Army 24-Pounder Field Howitzer, Pattern 1841, displayed at Battery 5 at Petersburg
A US Army 24-Pounder, Pattern 1841, is displayed at Battery 5 near the Visitors Center at Petersburg National Battlefield. It was cast by Ames in Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1862. As manufactured it weighs 1,320 pounds. It is marked “State of Conn.” on top of the tube just forward of the vent.
The 24-Pounder Field Howitzer was the companion piece to the 12-Pounder Field Gun, Pattern 1841 in which two of the 24—pounder howitzers would support four 12-Pounder guns in a heavy field artillery battery.
