US Army 8-Inch Rifle in Zanesville, Ohio
US Army 8-Inch Muzzle Loading Rifle Number 12 in Zanesville, Ohio. This 8-Inch MLR is from the first series of 10-Inch Rodman smoothbores converted in 1876. This Rodman was Cyrus Alger 10-Inch Number 21 cast in 1865. As originally manufactured, it weighed 15,080 pounds. In 1876 it was taken to the West Point Foundry where the original 10-Inch bore was reamed out to 13.5-inches. Then the rifled sleeve was inserted into the enlarged bore. The finished 8-Inch Rifle had a total weight of 16,050 pounds.
US Army 10-Inch Rodmans at Fort Moultrie
US Army 10-Inch Rodmans Number 156 and 182 which are displayed at Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island, South Carolina were both manufactured at Fort Pitt Foundry in 1863. As manufactured they weighed 14,965 and 14,980 pounds respectively. They were both shipped from the Augusta Arsenal in 1872 as part of the US Army's efforts to rebuild Fort Moultrie in the 1870s.
The 8-Inch Rodman Rifles on US Navy Carriages at Palisades Park
Two US Army 8-Inch Rifles which were converted from 10-Inch Rodmans in 1885 and 1886 are displayed at Palisades Park in Santa Monica, California. They were installed at the park in 1908
Intriguingly they are mounted on US Navy Carriages intended for the 8-Inch Rifle which was a similar conversion of the 11-Inch Dahlgren.

The Rodmans of Fort McHenry
Displayed at Fort McHenry near Baltimore, Maryland are three types of Rodman guns: 8-Inch Smoothbores, 8-Inch Rifles converted in the 1870s from 10-Inch Smoothbores, and 15-Inch Smoothbores. Taken together this is an impressive display of the Rodman type gun of the US Army during and after the American Civil War.
10-Inch Rodman and 8-Inch Rodman Rifle Conversions at Fort Monroe
Three 10-Inch Rodmans (two of which were converted to 8-Inch Rifles after the Civil War) are displayed at Fort Monroe in Virginia.
USS Keokuk’s Dahlgren and the Rodman Carriage
The 11-Inch Dahlgren at White Point Garden near Charleston, South Carolina is mounted upon a carriage for a 10-Inch Rodman. One of the two Rodmans now on the ground at Fort Moultrie may have “donated” the carriage. Looking at the cannon and the carriage, one can see how they were used together.
The Columbiads of Charleston
At Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, White Point Garden, and Magnolia Cemetery, the visitor to the Charleston area can see eighteen Columbiads used for the seacoast defense of Charleston before, during, and after the American Civil War.
